Dennis Phillips is one of the nine who will sit at the final table of the WSOP Main Event in November. He has pledged 1% of tournament winnings to the Prevent Cancer Foundation’s Bad Beat on Cancer fundraiser.

Making the announcement Phillips said, “Charity involvement has always been an important part of my life…”. He added that he hoped more poker players would follow suit in the future. Phillips is the current chip leader and should he remain on top till the end he stands to win over 9 million dollars.

PokerStars, the online poker room, has on its part announced that it will match Phillips’ contribution. Therefore if Phillips wins the donation to the Bad Beat on Cancer fundraiser should be around $182,000.

The Bad Beat on Cancer initiative started in 2003. Apart from WSOP it includes other major poker tournaments, home games and leagues. It has inspired some players to pledge a portion of their lifetime winnings.
